FAQ
Who do we help financially?
At this time, only testicular cancer patients living in Alberta.
How can we help?
Upon diagnosis we will pay for a sperm bank and parking/transportation for your initial appointments. If you meet our criteria we will help with rent, groceries, medical expenses, doctor approved cannabis and more. Just ask!
How can you donate to help Testicular Cancer patients?
Click on the Donate button above! Oneball is an entirely volunteer run organization, so your funds go directly towards our pillars of financial assistance (DFER Program), research, and awareness.
Is there a limit to the amount of assistance?
Oneball uses an equitable approach to its financial assistance program. What this means is that we take into account your cancer experience and your life factors (rent, groceries, family – that kind of thing) so that we give more to the people who need it most!
Meet Davis and the origins of the DFER Program
Davis was a physics engineer, a board game lover, musician and all-around nerd. In 2017, Davis was diagnosed an incredible rare form of testicular cancer. After many different unsuccessful treatment regimens, Davis turned to immunotherapy as the next step in his fight with testicular cancer. Unfortunately, the immunotherapy Davis needed was considered to be in clinical trial and was not covered by our health care system. This type of treatment was around $20,000 per round with a minimum of 4 rounds required. Davis needed help.
Davis and his family continued to reach out to many different organizations and other resources to try and pay for his treatment, but this proved to be incredibly challenging. In 2018, Davis and his family reached out to Oneball, where everyone was instantly moved by his story and wanted to do whatever we could to help. Since starting in 2016, Oneball’s financial assistance has always operated under a simple philosophy of “whatever the patient needs”. With Oneball’s support, Davis and his family ran a hugely successful GoFundMe campaign, raising over $65,000 to fund Oneball’s financial assistance program, which gave us the opportunity to do what we needed to in order help Davis. You can find a full account of Davis’s story on his blog: www.daviskickscancer.com.
Through our journey with Davis, Oneball’s financial assistance program saw a number of firsts: our first funding of trial medications, our first funding of cannabis products to help his sleep and appetite (signed off by his doctor), and palliative care. While the treatments were sadly unsuccessful, we were fortunate enough to help him to spend his final moments with dignity at home with his family. Davis’s journey has had a profound impact on myself and our organization, and its effects are still being felt today.
Throughout his testicular cancer journey, Davis had two goals; to bring awareness to testicular cancer AND to help people. This fund allows Oneball to do both, and we are proud of have this program named in his honour.
